Polymorphous Light Eruption (PMLE) vs. Photoallergic Reactions
Similarities:
- Both are forms of photosensitivity, where exposure to sunlight triggers an abnormal immune response.
- They cause red, itchy rashes on sun-exposed areas.
- Gradual sun exposure and sunscreens are recommended to reduce sensitivity in both conditions.
Differences:
- PMLE usually appears after early spring sun exposure and affects those with inherently sensitive skin, often resolving as skin becomes more tolerant over time.
- Photoallergic Reactions occur due to chemical exposure, such as certain medications or skincare products that make the skin hypersensitive to UV rays.
- PMLE symptoms typically subside on their own, while photoallergic reactions may need treatment to remove the offending substance.
