Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

Definition: BCC is a type of skin cancer that arises in the basal cells, which are found in the outermost layer of the skin.
Cause: Long-term exposure to UV radiation, both from the sun and tanning beds.
Types:

  • Nodular BCC: Appears as a pearly bump with blood vessels.
  • Superficial BCC: Flat, reddish patch that can grow over time.
    Protection Before the Cause:
  • Use sunscreen every day, especially if you have fair skin or spend significant time outdoors.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, and seek shade during peak hours.
    Cure After the Cause:
  • Surgical excision to remove cancerous cells.
  • Mohs surgery, which removes thin layers of tissue for analysis until no cancerous cells remain.
  • Radiation therapy for large or difficult-to-remove tumors.
Conclusion: Basal cell carcinoma has a high cure rate when detected early but can cause significant tissue damage if left untreated.
